Jeremiah 39:9-10. After The siege and fall of Jerusalem, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, "carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who were left in the city, those who deserted to him, and the people who remained." But Nebuzaradan "left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time."

The fall of Jerusalem was horrific and God's people suffered greatly, but here we see one small example of God taking care of the least of His people. Some of the poorest people, who owned nothing, and were worth nothing in the eyes of the conquering army, are the only ones who were left in their homeland. They were not taken into exile, they were permitted to stay in Jerusalem. Not only that, they were given vineyards and land that they never could have hoped for prior to the fall.

God put very careful rules in place for the management of society. Rules about private property, land ownership, and rules about how to care for the poor, were all part of the law given to Moses. But the people strayed so far from these rules and evil became so great that God had to allow the city of Jerusalem to fall in order to allow his people to learn to turn back to the law.

When we stray from the rules we cannot then claim protection under them. The rich Jews were living the high life and were completely corrupted, they were getting all the benefits of the laws of land ownership and private property, but not accepting any of the responsibility of caring for the poor. They were not even thinking of the poor. Because of their sin, the whole system broke down and in one fell swoop they were conquered, everything was taken from them, there was no more private property or land ownership, and they were carried away into exile. And the conquering army, who looked on the poor in the same way that the Jews had, actually treated the poor better than the Jews did. They, at least, gave land to them to live on.

Thus, God accomplishes taking care of his littlest ones even while he punishes the mighty mightily.
