Psalm 104:25-27 "Yonder is the sea, great and wide, which teams with things innumerable, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan which thou didst form to sport in it. These all look to thee, to give them their food in due season." (I love the idea that God created Leviathan, a sea monster, to "sport in" the great, wide sea! But why wouldn't He? God is love, love is creative, so God creates things He loves, and loves the things He creates.)
All of creation, even Leviathan, looks to God to give them their food in due season. But only man was created in God's image to assist with this task, only we were given dominion over the earth. If we were still in perfect communion with God, the world would be ordered properly and there would be plenty for all, without want. As it is, however, we have disordered the world through sin, and therefore all of creation struggles. As Paul says in the second reading today, we await the time that "creation itself [will] be set free from slavery to corruption", but for now, "all creation is groaning in labor pains." (Romans 8:21-22).
God is still asking us to live rightly ordered lives in Him, including caring for His Creation in the way He intended. The more of us who try to do that, the more order we bring to the world, and the more we all enjoy the fruits of Creation (even Leviathan 😉).
