Acts 13:47 "For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, 'I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth.'"

Paul speaks these words after the Jews to whom he and Barnabas had been preaching rejected and reviled them. Paul and Barnabas are, essentially, shaking the dust from their sandals in testimony against the Jews, and will now focus on bringing the Gospel to the Gentiles.

There have been several times in the recent past where I have been rejected by my "own" for speaking what I know to be the truth. I was not saying anything to try to challenge, convince, or convert anyone, I was merely saying what I thought we all believed and knew. It was so shocking and demoralizing to find that my words, spoken to a friend or a family member who I thought were on the same page, were so offensive to them.

At the same time, in less close relationships with people outside the faith, I would say the same kinds of things, again, not intending to convince, but just because it is the way I speak and what I think. With these people, I would sometimes see the light of understanding dawn on them in real time; I was apparently saying something they had never heard before, but that made perfect sense (as God's Word does!). I have seen people who were away a long time come back to the Church, and people who were not Catholic convert! It was so encouraging, and made me realize how powerful God's Word is and how the Holy Spirit is always working through us if we give ourselves over to Him.

People outside the faith are the "Gentiles" of our time, and God is calling to them just as He was in Paul's time. The faithful who have allowed themselves to be lied to are more difficult and resistant (and defensive) because they believe, and are often encouraged even by people in the Church to believe, that the lies are truth, or that the lies are something that can and should be tolerated in order to "love" others. It is not love to promote or tolerate lies, we love others by sharing truth with them, and they will see that eventually.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of people who see that they are being lied to but who do not know the Truth. While we wait for those close to us to come around, we can bring the God's Truth to the "Gentiles" just by being in relationship with them, and not being afraid to speak what we know to be true.
