Ezekiel 36:32 "It is not for your sake that I will act, says the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel."

When God steps in to save His people, it is not because we deserve it. He knows when to do this, in His plan and His time, but He does not want us to get the wrong idea from those times of Divine intervention, as we tend to do. When God saves us from ourselves or other threats, He is not doing it because we are doing great and just need a little Divine assistance. Rather, here He reminds us that we have every reason to be ashamed and confounded for our ways.

God intervenes to save us even when we are not deserving. (How could it ever be otherwise? We are all sinners!) God sent His Son to die for us "while we were yet sinners" (Romans 5:8) and Jesus continues to intercede for us with the Father even as we continue to offend Him.

God loves us so much, He wants us with Him in eternity experiencing that love, and will do anything to help us get there. We should be eternally grateful to Him, but we should not assume His intervention is due to our personal goodness, we always have reason to be ashamed. Only God is good (Mark 10:18), He acts for goodness' sake, which redounds to our benefit because we are His beloved children.
