Ezekiel 6:1-9. God tells Ezekiel to prophesy against Israel that he will bring the sword upon them and they will lie slain before their idols. Their altars to their idols will be desolate, their bones will be scattered around them. But God shall leave some of them alive to be scattered to other countries, there to remember their wanton ways and eventually regret bitterly "the evils which they have committed."

Again, this is how it works. When we get so caught up in our evil ways, individually or as a nation, we do not see it, we cannot see it, our idols have become our god - we think we are worshiping the true God when we are actually slaves to our idols. This is happening in America now with politics. It has become a god, an idol. People have their religion confused with their politics - they think that by following one political party and adhering to that party's policies, even when they are diametrically opposed to God's law, they are the good guys, they are being holy - it is a true idol, and it is having the corrupting effect that every idol has on their souls (see the reaction to any restriction on the very obvious evil of aborton, for example, and the experiments being done on living aborted babies).

People who have their politics as their religion (and that is many, if not most of us right now) cannot see the evil they are doing, they are blind to it because the political party "god" dictates the rules, and they are following the rules of their god, so they think they are all good!  Because we have come so under the sway of this idol, we are being punished for it. God is beginning the process of scattering our bones about our altars, figuratively (at least, for the most part).

Many now can see the absolute ridiculousness, ineptitude, and craven dishonesty of our political parties and thought leaders. Many more will. But until we all do, the downfall will continue - it is the way God wakes us up. We will then, eventually, see that we have been worshiping idols and have paid the price. Then the only thing left is for us to turn back to God and then, and only then, will things start improving.
