Psalm 78:1-4. In a prelude to his psalm, the psalmists calls the people to listen and says "I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wondrous wonders which he has wrought."

We have not listened to or followed this advice, to our great detriment. We have not told our children the truth. And note how the truth is described as "dark sayings" of the "glorious deeds of the Lord." God's deeds are indeed glorious, they are all for our good and benefit and for our eternal salvation, but sometimes his glory is frightening. Sometimes his deeds seem dark, especially to children.

We do our children a terrible disservice when we fail to tell them of God's ways. His way is the only way to salvation, even if it is difficult to hear. And whether or not we speak the truth to our children, the devil is always whispering his comfortable lies in their ears. If we let the devil's lies be the only thing our children hear, and we have, they will come to believe that this is truth - why wouldn't they? The whole world is telling them these lies!

That is what we have done and that is where we are. The whole world, or much of it, is believing that lies are truth. Now the truth-tellers are being punished and persecuted. So be it, we let ourselves get into this state, myself included. The only way to begin getting out of it is to start speaking the "dark sayings" and "things that we have heard and known" that just so happen to be truth to the coming generation.
