Deuteronomy 25:17-18 "Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, how he attacked you on the way, when you were faint and weary, and cut off at your rear all who lagged behind you; and he did not fear God."
Our fight is not with Amalek, but we are nonetheless in battle. Our enemies are legion, the principalities and powers that fell with Satan. They do not fear God, at least not in the way they should, and they are always looking for a way to turn us from Him. When we grow faint and weary, they know it, and they attack our weak positions. If we are still headed in the right direction, toward God, they will not attack head-on, but will approach from the rear, going for the parts of us that are lagging behind.
Our enemies are patient, they know they just have to chip away at us until they have taken enough that we do not have the strength to keep going. Then we stop, we turn from God and start looking for comfort where we are. We become vulnerable to an all out attack then, because we have forgotten our destination, we are not looking to God and His direct protection.
So we should remember the times when we were faint and weak and felt under attack, remember what it felt like and what we lost. Those were real spiritual battles, sometimes also physical ones. We may have lost very important things in those attacks. But if we continue on our journey with our eyes on God, He will strengthen us, send us assistance, and return what we have lost many times over as we face further persecutions. (Mark 10:29-31).
God does not let times of weariness and these attacks go on without respite. Although the world is in a constant battle, He gives us periods of consolation and peace. In those times, we should not forget the times of struggle, lest we grow complacent and take our eyes off Him. Rather we should remember them and reflect on how following Him kept us from falling completely to our enemy. We can thus be strengthened for our next part in the battle, which is sure to come.
