Hosea 12:2. "The Lord has an indictment against Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways, and requite him according to his deeds."

We are all sinners, and all, even those chosen by God for a special part in His plan, must be indicted by God and punished according to their deeds. This is a blessing, really. If we don't suffer through the indictments and punishments here, we will have to do so before we get to Heaven. Everything I am learning and hearing tells me that it is much better to suffer them here, so I keep asking God to give me this grace now (even though I must admit I do complain about the suffering!)

We must be made clean before we can be in God's presence. Why risk wasting time and suffering in purgatory if we can ask God to give us this grace now?
