Psalm 19:9-10 "[T]he ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycombs."

 

Think of all the material things we value in this life. Gold, money, houses, jewelry, cars, there so many things on which the world places value, and we do individually, as well. God's laws are more valuable than any of them. Think of all of the sweet and delectable things we have to eat, God's law is more delicious than any one of them. 

 

This is not the way we think of laws and ordinances. We tend to put those in the "have to do" section of our brains, while we put things we value in the "want to have/do" section. Even the word "ordinances" makes us think of tiresome or finicky duties. But God's laws only exist to make us happy. They are like a hidden path that leads to a place more wonderful than we can imagine.

 

If we would only would think of His laws this way, would be so joyous in following them. Sometimes the path is difficult or tiresome, but we know everything worth having is worth working to obtain. And the payoff for knowing and following God's law is unfathomable: eternal happiness beyond imagination! So yes, His laws truly are more valuable and sweeter than anything we can find here. The pleasure we get from earthly things is just a shadowy foretaste of what we will experience when we reach the place His laws are leading us.
