Acts 11:27-30. In those days, prophets came to Antioch from Jerusalem and one, named Agabus, "stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world," and this came to pass in the days of Claudius. So the disciples in Antioch determined to send relief to those in Judea, "and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul."
There were still prophets in this time right after Jesus', just as there are still prophets today. It is true that Revelation ended with Jesus, He is the fulfillment of all Revelation. So there will be no more prophets such as those in the Old Testament or John the Baptist who reveal who God is, but there will always be prophets to whom God speaks in order to warn or advise his people. In fact, we are all called to be priests, prophets, and kings.
The prophet Agabus was inspired by the Holy Spirit to warn of the coming famine. Because of his warning, the disciples in Antioch were able to donate aid and assistance, each according to his ability, and send it to Judea where and when it was needed. There are prophets today warning of many things, here is one example. We should discern, to be sure it is the Spirit guiding these prophets, but we should also listen. God loves us and sends us warnings to prepare us for things. Not listening to Him is foolish indeed.
We should not be afraid of prophecy or embarrassed by prophets, even when we ourselves are called to this task. Prophecy inspired by the Holy Spirit always has a purpose and we must speak it and listen to it!
