1 Timothy 3:16 "Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of our religion: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory."
I have been passingly interested lately in some of the unconventional theories about ancient civilizations, the pyramids, megalithic structures, and a past and coming cataclysm. I occasionally read Roger Cunningham (Ethical Skeptic), and Ben Davidson (Space Weather News), and have watched one of Michael Knowles' interviews with Tim Alberino. The other day I came across a Piers Morgan interview with Graham Hancock, and I started watching Ancient Apocalypse on Netflix. I've written before about how I don't know if any of these things are true, and I don't need to know because I do know that God is true, and I do know His Son Jesus Christ, our Savior.
One thing that struck me while watching the first few episodes of Ancient Apocalypse was how there is a common "myth" (Mr. Hancock would say memory) all around the world of a great flood and a savior-like figure who comes after the flood to re-educate the people so civilization can start anew. Mr. Hancock's working theory is that these figures are survivors of an ancient race that was all but destroyed by a cataclysmic flood. Again, I don't know what is true here, and I don't need to know, but I thought of how each of those flood and savior stories is the same yet different. They all tell a similar story, but have different angry gods and different manifestations of the savior figure. But now that Jesus has come, there is only His story - the whole world knows or is to know of Him. These ancient myths or memories are similar but different while Jesus is the same everywhere, revealing an unchanging God who is the true God, the God of the universe, the only God.
Jesus "manifested in the flesh" in a very small part of the world at a time when His message could not spread by any other means but word of mouth. Yet, He has been vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, taken up in glory, and believed on in the world. Some non-believers may try to make a myth of Jesus, but they have to engage in some intense denial of history to do so. Both the historical record and the prevalence of belief tell us that Jesus' story is real, and that story tells us He is the Savior of the world, there will be no other nor do we need another - He is the Son of the one true God.
So while I find all of the discussions and theories about ancient civilizations and past and future cataclysms fascinating, I know that whatever the truth is, it is from God. He has and continues to do unexpected, marvelous things, so I do not discount anything as being part of His plan, but I do not have to have all the answers to have faith in Him. He has revealed Himself and His love for the whole world in the most convincing and undeniable way through His Son, that really is all any of us need to know!
