Ezekiel 39:17-20. God is telling Ezekiel to go out to the birds and beasts and tell them to get ready to eat like they never have before at "the sacrificial feast which I am preparing for you." They shall have their fill of blood, fat, and flesh and it shall be of the mightiest of men and beasts - the princes of the earth and the choicest rams, lambs, goats, and bulls. "You shall be filled at my table with horses and riders, with mighty men and all kinds of warriors, says the Lord God."

Does God actually want Ezekiel to go out and talk to the beasts and the birds? No, of course not, what would be the point of that? So then why is this here? What is the point of prophecy? Of course God does not want Ezekiel to talk to animals. Instead, this is one of those readings that is meant to prepare us - to show us that everything is happening in accordance with God's plan. If Ezekiel had not written down the words that he heard from God, we would not see that - that the destruction is God's plan in action. When the day of destruction comes, so that the mountains of Israel are filled with the bodies of the slain and the birds and the beasts are feasting on them, we can look back to this and see that God told us what was coming through Ezekiel. This is how we learn!

This is one of the points of prophecy - for us to look back and realize the truth. The other point is to get us to change before this destruction becomes comes about, thus averting it. We must prophesy the words that God wants us to say. His plan will play out, but when we speak his words at the time he asks us to, they help everyone. They help people to either change now, before the punishment, or to look back on the punishment and see the point of it.
