Acts 5:27-32. The guards bring the apostles from the temple and back to the council for questioning. The high priest chastises them, saying the council had strictly forbidden them from preaching in Jesus' name, yet they have filled Jerusalem with their teaching. He says the apostles intend to bring Jesus' blood upon them. Peter and the apostles answer as they did before, saying that they must obey God rather than man. "The God of our fathers raised Jesus whom you killed by hanging him on a tree." Jesus has been exalted by God to sit at his right hand and give repentance and forgiveness of sins. "And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him."
I rather flippantly thought "Wow, you can't beat calling the Holy Spirit as an expert witness!" when I read this, but then I realized it is true! The Holy Spirit is the most expert of witnesses. He knows exactly what happened and cannot be refuted. He is God! The council says that the apostles' preaching will bring Jesus' blood on the leaders if it continues, but the truth is, Jesus' blood is already on their hands, they just don't want to admit it to themselves or have others realize it.
Since Peter and the apostles are filled with the Holy Spirit, they are witnesses not only of what they have seen, but also of God's testimony. They saw Jesus killed and raised and can testified to that, and the Holy Spirit adds to their testimony that Jesus is now at the right hand of the Father and will bring repentance and forgiveness of sins. Their testimony is irrefutable, they are speaking only the truth and nothing but the truth! And knowing these things, they must proclaim them, they must obey God and not these mistaken and complicit priests.
This makes me think of my own particular judgment. The Holy Spirit will be there, as will my guardian angel. The Holy Spirit will testify to the truth. He knows me, He has been with me, and He has watched my progress, filling me with Himself when I am ready. I cannot refute His testimony, it simply will be the truth. All I can do is try, with His help and the help of my guardian angel and all the angels and saints, to be worthy, while I still have time, of a good report from Him.
