Luke 22:19-20. At the Last Supper, Jesus takes bread and, after giving thanks, breaks it and gives it to his disciples saying "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." He takes the cup after supper and says "this cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood."

Two lines only and yet the greatest gift is contained in them - the gift of the Eucharist. There is no need for lengthy explanations, in fact, they would just distract from the import of these lines. Less is definitely more here.

I imagine the silence around the table as Jesus spoke. Most likely, the disciples had been talking amongst themselves, discussing things as one does at a meal. But I am certain that as soon as Jesus took the bread in hand silence came over them and all attention was on Him. He didn't have to say anything, His very presence and being would have commanded their attention - they would know something monumental was about to happen.

Then He says those words "This is my body." What does it mean? I'm sure they wondered how can this bread be His body? What is He talking about? But they had been with Him long enough to listen and trust. They did not understand everything He said when He said it, but they had learned that in time they would, and I'm sure it was the same with the Eucharist. They would remember this moment after His Ascension. They would remember Him saying "do this remembrance of me" and they would. They would call all the faithful together and do this in remembrance of Him for the rest of time.

How utterly, unbelievably awesome is that?! We are the luckiest people in the world! No wonder God wants to call everyone to this!
