Ezekiel 2:8 "But you, son of man, hear what I say to you; be not rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you."

Why do we so often not want to eat what God gives us? He only ever gives us what is best for us and the world; He only is concerned with the eternal salvation of all, yet we so often turn up our noses at what is on our plate and look around for something more appealing to our corrupted palate. Think of the Jews in the desert, tired of the manna and pining for the cucumbers they ate in slavery! (Numbers 11:5) Any time we eat something not offered to us by God, we are choosing cucumbers and slavery.

The way we eat is such a good analogy for whether we are choosing to do God's will. A few years ago when I fasted on bread and water a few days a week during Lent, and didn't eat sweets at all, I came to have such a better appreciation for the food I could eat. After a day of nothing but bread and water, celery never tasted so good! I thought of how I would often be searching for a snack and would not even consider having a healthy stalk of celery, but would instead search out something processed, full of sugar or salt, empty of benefit, and even potentially harmful to my health. I would choose Doritos over celery every time!

That is what we do when we refuse God's will, when we won't open our mouths and eat what He gives us, which is all good and most beneficial to our eternal health. Instead, we choose the empty calories and harmful effects of sin, so temptingly packaged and presented by the devil.
