Sirach 31:16 "Eat like a human being what is set before you, and do not chew quickly, lest you be hated."

The Book of Sirach is said to be "instructions on proper behavior in all areas of life", and that certainly is evident here! Sirach is giving us a lesson in table manners - eat what you are served, and do so politely. It is very good practical advice, but also can be interpreted as advice for life.

We should accept what life gives us, it is from God, and it is what is meant for us when it is given. Sometimes we will be given things we very much enjoy, but we should not "chew greedily" in those times. Sometimes we will be given things we would very much rather not have, but we should take them on knowing they are what is meant for us then. We should take all with the same equanimity, enjoying our blessings with gratitude, not greed, and meeting the things we don't like with calm acceptance, not bitterness or complaint.

Everything we are served by God is for our good, sometimes in ways we do not understand. Sirach's table matter advice helps us realize that and act appropriately beyond the table and into life.
