1 John 5:20-21. "And we know that the Son of God has come and given us understanding, to know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourself free from idols."

 

Why is it so difficult for us to keep ourselves from idols? I mean, John is right, God Himself has given us understanding, through His only Son, Jesus Christ, who humbled himself completely to become one of us and to suffer and die for us. He could not have made Himself anymore clear! And yet we still are like dogs distracted by squirrels!

 

The goal is obvious, the truth is right in front of us, the wisdom and understanding needed to get there are free for the asking, the God who created the universe wants desperately to help us get there, we can't lose! And yet we chase all the squirrels - money, sex, power, status, etc. We are just like little children, so easily distracted. Thank goodness God has patience with us, but we can't stay distracted forever. So stop chasing squirrels, before it's too late.
