Luke 11:1 "He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'"

 

How much do you want to bet it was John who asked this question? I say that because John was so in tune with Jesus, I can picture him watching Jesus in prayer, seeing or sensing the connection He had with the Father, and realizing he wanted guidance in prayer in order to feel the same connection. 

 

Straying a little, but in the same vein, last night I read Luisa Piccarreta's Book of Heaven entry from November 20th, 1922 (Book of Heaven, Volume 14). There Luisa reflects on the currents of love that flowed between God and man when Adam was in right relationship with Him, and how Jesus' suffering In the Garden of Gethsemane was in large part due to those currents having been blocked since the Fall. Jesus was giving back to the Father all the love that had been denied Him by every person who will ever live, and feeling all the "betrayed love, denied love, rejected love, unknown love, trampled love, etc.", piercing His heart in unfathomable ways.

 

When Adam chose sin, he cut off the currents of love. Jesus compares it to someone who had the power to stop the light and heat of the Sun from coming to Earth and does so. Can you imagine the harm? "[T]he earth would remain in the dark without fecundity, without life." This is what happened when Adam turned from God! We really are living in a very dark and dangerous place here, with no power within ourselves to fix it - the one with the power to maintain the currents of light and love cut them off, so that no human being after him even had proper knowledge of them, much less the power to get them re-flowing. Only the Creator could undo what Adam did, and so Jesus did - "Man did all this in Creation, and I descended from Heaven to earth in order to reunite again all the currents of love, but - oh! how much it cost Me. And man continues with his ingratitude, and returns to break the currents repaired by Me."

 

Jesus knew of the currents of love that were humanity's birthright.  His questioning disciple most likely saw some sign of them while watching Jesus praying to the Father, and felt the pull of what humanity had lost. He asked for some guidance, and Jesus taught us the Lord's Prayer in response. God's will is to repair those currents of love, His Son did so at great cost, and now we can live in them if we choose to stay in God's Will. Jesus tells Luisa that living in the Divine Will will eventually bring His Kingdom to earth, as He inferred when He taught us to pray "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven".
