Wisdom 13:4. "And if men were amazed at their power and working, let them perceive from them how much more powerful is he who formed them."

Everything that amazes us is from God, it is when we forget that there is one Creator behind all of creation that we begin to make idols. Solomon here is speaking of elemental things of creation like fire, wind, water, and the stars. He says "If through delight in the beauty of these things men assumed them to be gods, let them know how much better than these is their Lord, for the author of beauty created them." Wisdom 13:3.

We do this with all kinds of things - we admire and celebrate the created thing (including ourselves), but forget about the Creator, leading us to idolatry and great misery. We not only do this with the earth and things of creation, as Solomon speaks of, but also with the works of our hands. God gives us talents, abilities, and biological urges to create, He loves and wants us to participate in His creation! He set up the world and established His laws in order to let us do that in the best way possible for all of creation and all people. When we keep Him and His laws in mind while using our talents and abilities, or satisfying our biological impulses, we are working with Him to bring new things and even new life into the world. But when we forget about Him and begin creating for our own sake, planning our pregnancies, feeling entitled to children, using illicit means to advance our goals, then things start going awry very quickly.

We can see this happening now - we have begun worshiping ourselves and the work of our hands, and have pushed God out of the picture altogether. Without God, our thoughts of what is "good," or "right," must be correct because we are good, even godly, people. Therefore, if God's laws contradict ours, His must give way.

Thinking of ourselves this way and forgetting about God is also leading us to confuse the dominion God gave us over the earth and its creatures with total control of these things. After all, if there is no God, who will take care of the earth but us? Instead of observing, admiring, and participating in the ways that God allows the planet to heal itself and continue creating bounty for us, we think it is up to us alone to fix things, according to our own ideas, and we make the world so much worse in the process. That is the way idols always work, they lead us to our own destruction.

Right now, through our idolization of ourselves, especially, but also science, our planet, and many other things, we are actually in the process of creating our very own hell on earth. It won't stop until we all wake up and remember who the Creator actually is. When we finally do, we can go back to enjoying this beautiful creation He has given us in the proper way, without abusing it for our pleasure nor for our misguided and self-indulgent attempts at fixing it.
