Jeremiah 51:19. "Not like these [idols] is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the Lord of hosts is his name."

It is so easy to slip into idolatry, especially since God gives us so many good things. In times of difficulty, anxiety, or when inflamed by our passions, we can find one of these good things brings us relief or solace. This is what God meant them to do for us, but our problem is when we don't look up and see that it was God who gave us the relief and the solace through those things. We become attached to the thing itself, we think we can't live without it, we give up other good things, and even our relationship with God, to pursue it.

This is one form of idolatry, the single-minded pursuit of something that has helped us or given us pleasure as the source of all assistance or pleasure, forgetting that God formed that thing, as he did all things. Things that give us comfort are meant to point us to Him, not to be an end in and of themselves.
