Hebrews 7:1-10. Paul is describing how Melchizedek is a forerunner of Christ. We don't know a lot about Melchizedek, "He is without father or mother or genealogy, and has neither beginning of days nor end of life." Paul implies this is intentional (as all things are in Scripture). Melchizedek resembles the Son of God and continues as a priest forever. Melchizedek showed up to bless Abraham after the slaughter of kings, and Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything, just as the Levitical priests are to accept the tithes from Abraham's descendants. Abraham obviously saw Melchizedek as worthy tithing to. Melchizedek is the king of Salem, that is, the king of peace. Even Abraham, the great father of the Jewish people, is inferior to Melchizedek, for "it is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior."
I was feeling down today, and at Mass this morning I was praying hard for Christ to come to me, to come to all of us, we need him so much right now. We need his Truth. Maybe I got this reading today to show me that Christ is always with us - he was even present to Abraham, in the form of Melchizedek, even before anyone knew who Jesus Christ was.
So he is here, and I meet him in everyone that I meet. I need to stop wallowing and worrying and have faith - Jesus will come to me, and come to all of us, when we need him to. I need to be able to recognize him in the people that I meet.
