Mark 3:1-6. Jesus enters a synagogue where there is a man with a withered hand. The Pharisees watch him to see what he will do, so they can accuse him if he heals on the sabbath. Jesus calls the man over and says "Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to harm?" They are silent and he is saddened at their hardness of heart. He heals the man and the Pharisees immediately leave and take counsel on how to destroy Jesus.

The interplay between Jesus and the Pharisees can teach us so much. Once they see a few of Jesus' miracles and have heard enough about him, they see him only as a threat. They cannot see the miraculous good that he is doing, because it threatens them too much. Then, in every other interaction between them and Jesus they are always trying to trick or trap Jesus for the purpose of destroying him.

But Jesus is never doing this, he is always the same, and he approaches every interaction with them as a way to convert them, to save them, to love them, to help them see the truth.

The fact that Jesus loves them so much and is always right (of course) just enrages them further and leads them to convince themselves he is more of a threat, until they ultimately have to kill him to assuage their fear and the internal hatred they have stoked. This is what we do when we give ourselves over to lies for whatever reason, whether for lust, or power, or money. We cannot see the truth and we become hateful toward anyone who speaks it. It is very dangerous road, and the Pharisees show us where it ends up.
