Psalm 63:9, 11. "But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth. ... But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall glory; for the mouths of liars will be stopped."

This psalm was written by David "when he was in the wilderness of Judah" according to its inscription. Thus, David was fleeing from an enemy, from the lying mouths of those who sought to destroy his life.

In situations like this, when we have been betrayed and lied to or about, when we are afraid for our lives and banished into the wilderness, it is very easy to become bitter and hopeless. This, in turn, can lead us to sin in response to the sin being done against us, and thus perpetuate the cycle of evil in the world. But David does not do that. Instead, he trusts in God, knowing that the mouths of the liars will eventually be stopped, and that those who seek his life will eventually get their just punishment. He knows that if he perseveres, God will set him, the rightful king, on the throne, and the kingdom and his faithful servants will rejoice in glory. The cycle of sin stopped with David, and because of that, his kingdom was one of tremendous glory.

David was also a "type" for Jesus, and we can see that so clearly in this passage. Jesus is the rightful King of all. He persevered through the actions of those who sought his life, even through death. He never gave back what was given to Him, He gave only love, even to his persecutors. He never retaliated. He trusted that the Father would see Him through, and that eventually all who swear by His name shall glory. He knew that eventually the Truth would prevail, because He is the Truth, He knew that the mouths of liars would be stopped. We know all of this, too, because we have seen it in the life of David and, more perfectly, in the life of Christ.

So don't let the sinners lead you to sin; don't let betrayal make you betray; don't let lying cause you to lie. Persevere in the wilderness. Eventually the King will reclaim his glory, and all who swear by Him will glory as well.
