1 Samuel 28:25. "[A]nd she put [the food] before Saul and his servants; and they ate. Then they rose and went away that night."

The "she" here is the medium of Endor who had, just prior to this, summoned Samuel at Saul's command. Samuel had told Saul that he and his sons would die in the battle the next day and the kingdom would be given to David, because Saul did not obey God and did not heed Samuel's warnings. After this message, Saul could not eat, but the woman insisted, and prepared food for him. So Saul ate and went on his way to the battle where everything Samuel had said came to pass.

Both the medium and Saul show us how confused we can allow ourselves to become, and how deadly that confusion can be. The medium was practicing witchcraft, basically, so she was a tool of the devil, but she didn't see it that way, and her basic human instinct to care for others was obviously still there. Saul also had disobeyed God. When Samuel was alive, he had warned Saul, but Saul refused to listen. Now Saul is confused as to why God has abandoned him, and he consults a medium and raises Samuel's spirit, both of which are further major transgressions against God. Both of these people have gone so far to the "dark side," that they do not even see what they are doing wrong. It is such a dangerous place to be, and yet we can get there so easily!

Once we make one step toward the devil, he leads us further and further down that path. I have been in a state of blind sinfulness myself. All I can do is thank God that he gave me the trials and the people I needed to wake me up and show me my errors. I can't imagine being Saul here - knowing what is going to happen, and knowing it is because of his sinfulness, and yet having to get up and go out and face it. God will give us signs (often through events in our lives) and warnings (often through other people) so we do not get to this point. We need to be alert and humble and listen to them, lest we end up like Saul.
