Hosea 4:4-19. Things have gotten pretty bad in Israel! God blames the priests in large part: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge," but He also faults the people: "they have left their God to play the harlot." God will not punish the women for their harlotry, because the men are just as bad and have created this culture where women give themselves up so easily. Besides, the people's ruin is assured anyway, simply because of their behavior. "A people without understanding shall come to ruin."

When evil and sin become so prevalent that the culture itself doesn't even realize how wrong it is, then its ruin is assured, not by the hand of God (although God permits it), but just by the wrongness and ineptitude that all of this evil brings on the people. We forget how to be human, how to think like we should. We make ourselves unlike God, and more like demons and animals. Demons and animals cannot maintain a society, and nor can humans when we give ourselves over to these ways.

Here, God is angry with his priests, they should have preached against all of this but instead they got caught up in it. He is angry with the women, but they were just doing what the culture told them to do and what everyone else was doing. He is angry with the men for creating this culture by prioritizing their desires over Him. He is angry with everyone, but He will not strike any one person or group down, there is too much blame to go around and the people are bringing their own ruin upon themselves anyway.

"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold." Sin breaks the bonds that hold us together and to God. If there are just a few people sinning, the center will still hold, the connection between the majority and God will stay intact and will hold everything else together. But when the majority are sinning and normalizing the sin, teaching their children to follow in their misguided footsteps, they essentially create a new center of gravity around which they try to have reality rotate. This is not God, and it is not reality, so there is no center of gravity, no connective tissue, so everything breaks down and systemic collapse sets in. Nothing can be the center except for God. Nothing else is real.

This is where we are right now. Things are falling apart because the world is attempting to rotate around a false reality. Many have made themselves their own "gods" and try to construct reality around thier own feelings and desires. Powerful people are constructing a different reality, based mainly on convenient lies to advance their power, and trying to force everyone to accept it and pledge allegieance to it. None of these centers will hold, and systemic collapse is setting in. 

But take heart, we know who wins in the end! Israel fell but was eventually redeemed. Humanity fell but has been saved. We are falling again now, but there is a bottom, and once we reach it and suffer its consequences long enough, we will again turn back to God, the center who always holds. And He will welcome us home!
