Micha 5:10-15. On the day of punishment of the nations that did not obey, the Lord will cut off our horses, destroy our chariots, throw down our strongholds and cities, cut off sorceries and soothsayers, cut off images and pillars, so that we will know longer worship the work of our hands. He will root out our Asherim and destroy our cities in anger and vengeance. 

 

Are we in the United States a nation that is obeying? No, clearly not. Are we having our idols, or Asherim, cut out from us because of it? Yes, I do believe we are beginning to. John Adams said "Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." We are no longer a moral and religious people, and we are finding our constitution inadequate because of it. We are suffering societal decay and collapse. It is spiritual physics again - that is what John Adams was describing.

 

In order for any human society to flourish, the people have to have a common set of morals - a common belief system. The United States was founded on such a belief system and our constitution assumes that common morality so that it and its writers' intent would be interpreted in accordance with that morality. But we no longer have that common morality - we really don't seem to have any morality or religion at all. Instead, we have many idols, like politics and power (horses and chariots); institutions (pillars and cities); superstitious beliefs in science, gender and critical race theory, environmental protection, etc. (sorceries and soothsayers); and self-aggrandizement and promotion, especially through social media (images and pillars).

 

God is letting the facade of our idols be stripped away so we see the true emptiness that lies within them - they cannot give us life, love, or happiness. We are suffering because of our reliance on them instead of on God. Eventually, we will learn, but I am not too confident that it will be any time soon. I continue to see people grasp at these things even harder, even making fools of themselves by promoting the most obvious lies to try to defend their idols, instead of simply letting them go and turning to God.

 

Until that finally happens, we will continue to live in what feels like The Twilight Zone - where none of our emperors have any clothes, yet so many keep insisting they are beautifully attired and anyone who says they are naked is crazy!
