Isaiah 66:17-24. At the end of the (long!) Book of the Prophet Isaiah we get this final prophecy. God says he sees the deeds of those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following others, and who sit and eat swine flesh and mice, they shall all come to an end together. God is coming to gather all nations and tongues and they shall all come and see His glory. He will set a sign among them and He will send forth from His people messengers to all the cities who do not know of the Lord to "declare my glory among the nations." And they will bring their brethren back - on donkeys and in liveries, on horses and in chariots. They shall all come to Jerusalem and some of them will even become priests. God will make a new heaven and a new earth which shall remain and all shall come to worship before Him. And they shall go forth and see the dead bodies of those who rebelled against God "for their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh."

It strikes me how similar this is to what happens in the book of Revelation. Many of the same words are even used (see Revelation 15:4 and 21:1). Of course Isaiah was prophesying about the coming of the Savior, still many years off. Jesus will come and bring a new heaven and a new earth. He will be the sign that draws all nations. His disciples will be sent out to tell those who do not know of Him and to bring them into the Church, the New Jerusalem. But I think that this is also describing the Second Coming discussed in Revelation. At that time the dead will have their bodies which will not die but will be in a fire that cannot be quenched.

This story, our story, is cyclical, as we have seen before. The fall, the punishment, the suffering, the redemption, the coming home. But each cycle tends leads to a greater revelation, culminating in the ultimate revelation - that of the God-man Himself come to earth. He will come again, and make all things new. And that new heaven and new earth last forever.
