Numbers 12:1-8. Miriam and Aaron are grumbling about their brother Moses. They don't approve of him marrying a Cushite woman and they start to wonder whether it really is true that the Lord has spoken only through Moses. "Has he not spoken through us also?" they ask. The Lord hears them and calls all three of them together. He comes down in a pillar of cloud and says to Aaron and Miriam "Hear my words: if there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision ... Not so with my servant Moses.. With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in dark speech; and he beholds the form of the Lord."

Moses was unlike any other. God truly spoke to him, the way we speak to each other, and Moses beheld the form of God. He was so much more than just a prophet, to whom God speaks in visions and dreams. In this way, Moses is clearly a "type" of Jesus. Jesus has perfect communion with the Father. He speaks to Him "mouth to mouth" and he beholds His form, just like Moses. And this passage points out that "Moses was very meek, more than all men that were on the face of the earth." Again, this prefigures Jesus, the Lamb of God, meek and humble of heart. In that meekness, both Moses and Jesus channeled the power of God.

I think that total humility is necessary in order to have this close a relationship with God. (Mary is another example of this.) Often I think that we can be like Miriam and Aaron - thinking that we hear God, he can talk to us directly, we don't necessarily have to pay attention to the more difficult teachings of Moses or Jesus. But God chooses certain people to do certain tasks, and we must respect and listen to  those He has chosen to speak to in a in a special way. That is especially true when that person is Son of God Himself.
