2 Samuel 23:11-12. "And next to him was Shammah ... The Philistines gathered together at Lehi where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the men fled from the Philistines. But he took his stand in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and the Lord wrought a great victory."

This story introduces us to Shammah, one of David's "mighty men". When all the other men of David's army fled from the Philistines, Shammah stayed, fought, and defeated them. One obvious take from this is, with God on our side, we can stand up to any enemy.

I find it interesting, though, that it is specified that the Philistines had taken over a plot of lentils. Lentils are a very basic food source in the Middle East. So Shammah was not just defending his king and country, but also food for the common man. Shammah defending this plot in particular shows that he seems to have had a concern for not only the safety, but also the basic needs of the people of the kingdom. I think we are meant to see that Shammah was mighty in strength, but also in character, with the latter being perhaps the more admirable.
