Joshua 1:8 "This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success."
God is instructing Joshua after Moses' death. He reminds Joshua not to stray from the law He gave to Moses, and to meditate on it day and night.
Meditating on God's law is so very important. It keeps His commands front and center and helps us understand them better. As we meditate on His laws, they expand and branch out, pathways into deeper understanding and meaning open up before us. If we just hear God's law, file it away, but don't reflect on it often, we will miss so much beauty and love in it, and run the risk of falling into sinful tendencies without even realizing they are wrong.
This necessity of meditation is true for all of Scripture, really. The Bible is written truth, God's word to His beloved people. Daily meditation on Scripture keeps God as the focal point of our lives and brings us into greater relationship with Him. As we read and meditate, we come to see and feel His incredible love for us shining through every word of Scripture.
