1 John 1:1-4. John tells us why he is writing this letter. He and the other apostles have seen, touched, and heard "[t]hat which was from the beginning," the life made manifest. He is proclaiming to us that "the eternal life which was with the Father ... was made manifest" to them. He wants us to know so that we will have fellowship with them, as their fellowship is now with the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. So, he is writing this so that their "joy may be complete."

This is how it feels to have good news - you want to share it with everyone! You want everyone to be brought into your joy! Now take that feeling to the ultimate extreme - to the point where you do not only have good news, you have the best possible news in the entire history of the universe. There literally can be no better news. You have seen, touched, heard, dined with, and been friends with the source of all life itself, the power that has existed from the beginning of time. And that source, that power, has become man in order to be seen, touched, heard, dined with, and friends with not just you, but everyone who will ever exist!

He loves us all and has given John and the apostles the job of telling everyone! That is the joy and the "bursting at the seams" feeling that comes through from John's opening of this letter. And we have that good news too! We have been brought into fellowship with John, and the Father, and Jesus Christ. So we should be bursting at the seams to tell others as well, so that our joy may be complete!
