Ecclesiastes 2:18 "I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who came after me, and who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool?"

We do sometimes question the point of all the work we do, especially when the people coming up behind us don't seem to care as much as we do. We sometimes wonder whether they will be good stewards of it all. But when we approach our work as helping to build the Kingdom of God, we can get over this feeling and joyfully do our work in a way that makes it a gift to God, a gift that He will leave to the people He chooses to carry it on after us. And if it is not meant to be carried on, that's OK too, He gave it to us in our time and we can be satisfied that we did it with love and care, accomplishing whatever He intended, even if we don't see what that is.

The toil of this life can become something so much greater if we look at it in the right way. Everything we do, even the most mundane task, can be done as a participation in God's plan and offered as a gift to Him. Then, because we have no claim to it, having given it away as a gift, we do not have to worry about who will take over for us. God will see to that, and we will have helped him build His Kingdom on earth.
