Ezekiel 36:4-5 "[T]herefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God: thus says the Lord God to the mountains and the hills, the ravines and the valleys, the desolate wastes and the deserted cities, which have become a prey and derision to the rest of the nations round about; therefore thus says the Lord God: I speak in my hot jealousy against the rest of the nations ... who gave my land to themselves as a possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, that they might possess it and plunder it."

Wholehearted joy and utter contempt are not a good combination. The fact that the contempt exists alongside the joy means that the joy is born of pride. It is joy in one's own achievements, one's own power, one's own control, and it eventually begets contempt for anyone and anything other than self. This is the most basic of sins, it is Satan's sin.

As Christians, we should feel joyful. G.K. Chesterton said joy is "the gigantic secret of the Christian", but our joy comes from knowledge of God's love and providential care for all of His Creation. That kind of joy cannot coexist with contempt, because contempt refuses to reflect God's love towards some part of His creation.

So be careful with joy. It is a great feeling, but we should discern whether we are feeling it for the right reason. It should always come from love of God and neighbor. If we feel wholehearted joy while having no concern whatsoever for those who suffer from our actions, then our joy is not joy in God, it is joy in ourselves, and it is very dangerous.
