2 Kings 12:19-21. The death of King Jehoash of Judah. Jehoash was a good king, he did what was pleasing to God and he followed the lead of the high priest during his reign. But, the people did not turn away from their sin and idolatry during his reign and he allowed it to continue. In the end "His servants arose and made a conspiracy and slew Joash." They buried him with his fathers in the city of David and his son Amaziah took the throne.

Again, it is always the same. A good king will not survive long in a bad country with bad people. When the people are bad they will find a way to get rid of a good leader, whether they have to lie, steal, cheat, or even kill. When they have given themselves over to idols and false gods, any threat to those gods in the form of a king who is following the one true God must be disposed of.

Reading ahead, we learn that Amaziah is much like his father - a good king, but he does not root out the idolatry in the nation. So Joash was good, but that was not enough. He should have taken a hard stand against the idolatry. It would have been better for him and the country. He may have died doing it, but he was murdered anyway -. evil is never stated. And he would have set an example to his son, which could have changed the course of history for Judah.

It is not enough just to be good, we have to learn to see evil and do our part to fight it in this world.
