Luke 11:29-32. As the crowd increased around Jesus, he said "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given except the sign of Jonah." The Son of Man will be a sign to this generation in the way that Jonah was to Nineveh. The queen of the South came from far away to meet with Solomon when she heard of his wisdom, but something much greater than Solomon is here now and men ignore him. On judgment day, the men of Nineveh will condemn the people of this generation for failing to see the great sign that was given them.
What is it about us that makes us like this? It truly is evil! We have been given the greatest of signs, the greatest of gifts, much greater than Jonah or Solomon. God himself has come to us, preached to us, and died for us, yet we go on with our lives of sin as if nothing needs to change. Many actually have become so attached to their sin that they get angry or resentful when someone reminds them of God's laws, and of Jesus' sacrifice for us. I have felt this myself, I know it is the work of the devil - he has seduced me at times into believing that my sin is OK, or at least not so bad, it's just those other people that Jesus was talking to. My sin is not OK, none of us can ignore our own sin, in fact it is our sin and our sin alone that we are responsible for.
Jesus came for all of us. Every single one of us needs him and cannot have eternal life without him. So we better wake up, like the people of Nineveh did when Jonah reluctantly marched through their town telling them to repent or suffer destruction. I really do believe the time is running short for the repentance of this evil generation!
