Deuteronomy 31:20-22. God is preparing to dictate to Moses the song that he wants Moses to teach the people before they enter the Promised Land. They are to always remember this song and to teach it to their children. God says he is doing this because he knows once they get into the Promised Land and "are full and have grown fat", they will turn to other gods and serve them, they will break their covenant with God. "And when many evils and troubles have come upon them, the song shall confront their them as a witness ... for I know the purposes which they are already forming, before I have brought them into the land I swore to give."

God knows us so well! It is truly amazing that he doesn't give up on us and our fickleness! God even knows how songs tend to get stuck in our heads and come back to us at random times. His Word is written and given to us to be exactly that, something that will always be in our heads and our hearts (although it doesn't come to us at random times, it is with us always). We are to teach it to our children so that it is everremembered. That is the only way we will remember to turn to it and to him when the evils that we've brought into the world confront us.

This is God describing "the cycle" that I have talked about before  - we are miserable due to our sins and the sins of the world; we look to God to save us in the midst of our misery; he responds and blesses us abundantly; we eventually get so comfortable in our abundance that we forget who gave it to us; we start putting other things above God, like our comfort, our abundance, and our money; we start sinning badly because of this; we lose all we had and are again miserable. This happens over and over and over again in the Bible and in the world. Always and forever with God's people this is the cycle.

Let's try to break the cycle, or at least break it in our own lives, by remembering the song he has written in our hearts!
