Jeremiah 9:2 "O that I had in the desert a wayfarers' lodging place, that I might leave my people and go away from them! For they are all adulterers, a company of treacherous men."
So God wants out! He wants to get away from his adulterous people and crash somewhere alone for a while! He laments that he does not have this wayfarer's lodging place, and thank goodness He doesn't! God has made a covenant with his adulterous people, He's not going anywhere, even as they continue to "proceed from evil to evil" and not know Him (Jeremiah 9:3).
We are God's people, through the covenant made by His Son's sacrifice. He will never abandon us. But what does He do when we, who have been brought into the covenant, forget it or break it? He does not wash His hands of us, He does not create another universe where hopefully things will go better and leave us to our own devices. As much as He'd at times like to head out into the desert to get away from us, He's all in on this marriage. He stays faithful while we go further and further astray, and suffer more and more because of it.
A world that goes from evil to evil is not a pleasant one in which to live. Eventually the fruits of that evil mature and everyone suffers. This is what calls us back when we adulterers are left high and dry by our substitute loves, we realize we have nowhere else to turn but back to the actual source of love, the One who will love us always and never abandon us. Thankfully, we don't have to find Him hiding out in the desert or another universe, He is always right here waiting for us.
