Habakkuk 3:17-18 "Though the fig tree do not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation."

 

Whether it is famine, thirst, or any other horrendous thing (or series of things) happening, we should never give up our joy and our hope. The Lord, our God, is our salvation, no matter what. The bad things never have the final say, God does. He allows famine, war, destruction, and suffering at times as chastisements, to bring us back.

 

Habakkuk knew from God Himself that "the violence to Lebanon will overwhelm you; the destruction of the beasts will terrify you, for the blood of men and violence to the earth, to cities, and all who dwell therein. (Habakkuk 2:17). Habakkuk saw destruction and chastisements, yet he trusted. He waited, trembling, for "the day of trouble to come upon the people who invade us" (Habakkuk 3:16).

 

Even while the flocks and crops were failing, Habakkuk waited and trusted knowing that God would see him through all of it. "God, the Lord, is my strength" he said, in the midst of all of this suffering (Habakkuk 3:19), so should we, even when we look around this crazy and often very wicked world and are tempted to depression or despair. Do not worry, everything is part of God's plan, He is our strength and salvation.
