Ezekiel 32:15. "When I make the land of Egypt desolate and when the land is stripped of all that fills it, when I smite all who dwell in it, then they will know that I am the Lord."
Sometimes God has to go to great lengths to get our attention. Egypt in the Old Testament was one of the great power players that often troubled Israel. We saw in Exodus how far God had to go in order to set His people free, and now God is once again raising His hand against Egypt. This time, God is promising to punish Egypt by allowing them to be conquered by Babylon. "The sword of Babylon shall come upon you. I will cause your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones" (Ezekiel 32:11-12). You would think that Egypt would have kept the memory of the plagues of Exodus in mind and been a bit more humble, but nations and kings generally don't seem to do humility well.
We can apply this idea of keeping humility in mind to our own lives, over which we have control, and to our national life, over which we have far less control. We can and should try to remember the times we have been brought low and hold on to that humility. We all have difficult periods in our lives, when everything feels like it is going wrong. That is when God is calling to us the loudest. If we turn to Him, we come out of those periods with greater humility and trust in Him. We will then have learned the lesson we were meant to learn, and we must not let ourselves forget it.
Right now, we are being chastised in our country and in much of our world. It has not gotten to the point of Egypt's destruction yet, but it might, because many are not paying attention, and often the ones who are, and are trying to raise the alarm, are being silenced. ("With great determination they have shut a large number of My children down."*) Many of our leaders and power players are like Pharaoh, thinking of themselves as lions, when they are actually dragons, troubling and fouling the world (Ezekiel 32:2).
As we suffer through these chastisements, many still refuse to acknowledge they are even happening. Our leaders talk down to us, telling us our complaints and sufferings stem from "misinformation," as they try to maintain their web of lies. So we are not at the point, yet, when we as a nation are ready to acknowledge that God is in charge, that God is the Lord. That is why there is more suffering coming. That is why I pray for our leaders and a whole host of other people every day. The sooner we all turn to God, the sooner this will end. He's just trying to get out attention!
