Isaiah 1:21-23. Jerusalem, the faithful city, the city that was once full of justice, has become a harlot. "Righteousness lodged in her, but now murders." All that was good in her is lessened - her silver has become dross, her wine is mixed with water, her princes are rebels. Everyone in the city loves bribes and chases after gifts. None looks out for the fatherless or the widow.
The devil goes after the people and places who are faithful and full of justice. If they are truly good, like Jerusalem was, it takes a while to corrupt the whole thing but the devil is has time and is relentless. He just needs to start small, corrupting a small part with promises of something better or convincing us to "do what is good for you." That attitude starts to spread in ourselves and to family and friends and then out into the population. Eventually, even the princes are "companions of theives," everyone is only looking out for him or herself.
This is the epp and flow of the battle between good and evil, always.
We are, right now, seeing the effects of this corruption in America, in fact in the whole developed world. America's was once filled with justice, but she has now become a sad caricature of her former self. It took a long time, but the devil has accomplished it. But, also now, we are begining to see the seeds of God's justice.
Just as Jerusalem had to fall in order to be reborn, so our system is collapsing before our eyes. It is not just in America, the whole world-wide system, or at least that in the developed world, is collapsing. It is necessary. The world will be reborn into something so much better! God has promised it and he will do it. I cannot wait.
