1 Samuel 14:16-23. Saul's son Jonathan has just gone into the Philistine camp and killed twenty of their men causing great confusion. Saul's watchmen see the confusion in the camp and tell Saul (who did not know his son's plan, but now sees that he is missing from camp). Saul takes advantage of the situation by calling up the ark of the covenant and then going into battle against the Philistines. The Israelites are out armed and outnumbered by the Philistines, but they are so successful in this battle that the Jews who had gone over to the Philistines turn back and fight for Saul, and the men of Israel who had fled and were hiding in the hills come down to fight and pursue the Philistines. "So the Lord delivered Israel that day."

Jonathan, listening to God's promptings, enabled this victory. It is a lot like Judith in "Girl (With God) Power". One holy, good man, in tune with God, followed the promptings to go up, with his armor bearer, and spy on the Philistine garrison, saying "nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few." So he and his armor bearer go up, then Jonathan says let's show ourselves to the Philistines and if they tell us to stay where we are, we will, but if they tell us to come into the camp, we will know that the Lord has given them into our hands. The Philistines do tell them to come into the camp, which is when Jonathan and his armor bearer slay twenty of them, causing great confusionin their camp.

Jonathan was being discerning - not making his own plans but giving God room to work through him, to show him what God wanted him to do. And he listened and obeyed. He was not out for glory, he was letting God work and paying attention to God's promptings. This one man, listening to God, caused enough confusion in the camp to inspire the reduced Israelite army to attack the Philistines. That attack, led by the ark of the covenant (i.e., God), was so successful that the traitorous Jews came back to the Israelite army, and the deserters eventually did too.

This is what God can accomplish with one holy man. This story also shows the effects of individual action and bravery. When we work with God, even if it is just one of us individually, we can have enough of effect to cause a preference cascade for God and for Truth. He can save many by a few (or even one)!
