1 Maccabees 5:35-39. Timothy and his army have just delivered a heavy blow to Judas Maccabeus' forces and Timothy turns to the city of Alema which he takes, kills every male there, plunders, and burns with fire. He then goes on to do the same to all of the other cities of Gilead. Judas and his men meet to discuss Timothy's victories and Judas sends someone to spy out the camp. The spy reports back that "All the Gentiles around us have gathered to him; it is a very large force. They have also hired Arabs to help them, and they are encamped across the stream, ready to come and fight against you." So Judas and his men go out to meet them.

When your enemy's forces are arrayed against you, seemingly unbeatable, the best thing to do is gather your allies, assess the situation, and pray and discern God's will. Often, God will prompt you to meet the enemy head on with confidence - not necessarily confidence in yourself and your army, but in Him. When we ask for His guidance, He happily gives it, and uses whatever we have to fight the enemy that surrounds us.

No one is unbeatable, no force can win against God, we must always keep this in mind. If, after discernment, we realize that the battle that is facing us is one that we must fight, it is always better to go to the enemy with our full force and with God on our side, rather than waiting for the enemy to come to us. God often does ask us to fight for him and his people, and He will be with us in the battle if we are doing His will.
