Amos 5:21. "I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies." God is talking to all the people of Israel, in both of the kingdoms, here. (Amos 3:1) He has simply had it. They are too wicked, too far gone to be turned around. The chastisements are coming, and they will be terrible. ("I will smite the winter house with the summer house" (Amos 3:15), "The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left" (Amos 5:3).) The people are so blind to their own wickedness, however, that they keep up the pretense of proper worship. They still offer their sacrifices and hold the holy feast days, oblivious to the fact that this hypocrisy just increases their fault. ("[M]ultiply transgression; bring your sacrifices ... for you so love to do, O people of Israel." (Amos 4:4-5).)

Have you ever done nothing but love someone and had them hurt you terribly,  then want to act like everything is fine? They often bring you gifts (in the form of actual things, or offers of time together), but show no signs of acknowledging what they've done. They want to forget what they did, and want you to play along. They have no inclination towards repentance and change. The gifts they offer, then, hurt more than if they would just ignore you. The gifts are false, they represent a pretense of love that is clearly not felt, or once was and has been betrayed. If you accept the gift and try to go back to "normal" with them, they will only hurt you again because they are willfully blind to what they are doing wrong and how they have hurt you. This is exactly how God feels here. That is why He hates His people's feasts and assemblies. They are going through the motions of love and worship, but their hearts are turned from Him and they show no sign of wanting to change.

I totally get the sentiment here, and I struggle with how to relate to these people.*  Chastisements are not mine to give, nor do I want to give them. I do not want people to suffer, I just want the ones who have wronged me or others to wake up and repent. If they get back into right relationship with God and His rules, they will come back into right relationship with all. I think all I can do is pray for them, and I have been. I do sometimes see signs of change, and I'm hoping the change will come about fully without any further chastisements, we have already had so many!

*I think we can all relate to this right now, as this is how our government is behaving towards us - "Forget that we just put the country through years of hell with our abandonment of the constitution, our lies, and our corruption, and vote for us! Here's some loan forgiveness and cheaper insulin to sweeten the deal!"
