Isaiah 1:21 "How the faithful city has become a harlot, she that was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers."
Jerusalem had been the holy city, the place where God dwelled in His temple, but by Isaiah's time she was so corrupt that the only way to redeem her was through utter destruction. Step by step, one concession to evil after another, she came to be steeped in sin, filled with murderers. All the while, the people did not realize what they were doing. Even as God sent them various prophets, including Isaiah, they did not listen and would not look at their sinfulness.
Sin blinds us, we do not want to admit when we have become harlots and murderers. Yet, if we honestly looked at ourselves and our "city", at the fruits of what we are promoting, what would we see? I just read about a study that indicates our water supply is being poisoned by the abortion pill and fetal body parts. I had heard concern about this before, and thought, from a Biblical point of view, of course it is! Many people clamored for this pill to be made widely available; the view of our country seems to be that abortion is a good thing, and making it easier and more widely available is in the service of justice, another "step in the progressive direction". But if we look at it honestly, what are we really doing? We are encouraging the murder of a child by his mother. We are convincing the mother that murdering her child is a just and valid choice. We are making the murder of the most innocent and vulnerable as easy as possible, and then convincing the very people that God intended to be their most ardent protectors, their mothers, that this murder is a societal and personal good. We have dehumanized the unborn to the point that we are harvesting body parts from living survivors of abortion. It is absolutely pure evil, there is no other way to see it, and God is allowing us to suffer the consequences of our wickedness.
Will enough people allow themselves to see this wickedness so that we can change course? I do not know for sure, but I fear not. Just as the Jews ignored the prophets' warnings, it seems to me most of my countrymen have put on blinders and plugged their ears, they do not want to see or hear the truth. The devil, of course, assists with this, allowing the culture to find ways to discredit those who point out the wickedness. I fear we are like Jerusalem in Isaiah's time, already too far gone. We very well may, like Zion, have to be "redeemed by justice, and those ... who repent, by righteousness." (Isaiah 1:27)
