Acts 13:13-16. Paul and those with him leave Paphos and come to Perga. There John leaves them and returns to Jerusalem. The rest go from Perga to Antioch of Pasadia. On the Sabbath day, they go into the synagogue and sit down. After reading the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue say to them "Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it." So Paul stands up, motions with his hand, and begins his speech with "Men of Israel, and you that fear God, listen."

We are about to hear and see Paul in action for the first time! As I read Acts in sections like this it really builds the excitement - I am looking forward to Paul's speech, but I'm glad I didn't get to it today. The build-up of having him, Barnabas, and the rest come to this city, go to the synagogue on the Sabbath, and just sit there quietly, listening to the readings until the rulers ask them if they have anything to say, is enough for today. It really sets the scene and creates an atmosphere of anticipation. I am guessing that some word of Paul and Barnabas has preceded them, since the synagogue rulers knew to ask them if they wanted to speak. I wonder if there was tension in the room or just excitement? I think probably both. What would these men say? Did the synagogue rulers find them threatening? I would love to have been there!

I find I keep saying that to myself as I go through Acts, but I think the point of me being inspired to read Acts now is that I kind of am there. This is the type of thing that is happening now, all over the place, as God begins the process of renewing His Church. This is such an exciting time to be alive and to be Catholic!
