Jeremiah 48:11 "Moab has been at ease from his youth and has settled on his lees; he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, nor has he gone into exile; so his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed."
Chapter 48 of Jeremiah is God's promise of judgment on Moab, a neighbor to Israel and a people of loose relation to them through Lot, Abraham's relative. Apparently, Moab has become proud, overly comfortable, and haughty, looking down on the Israelites in derision (Jeremiah 48:28-30). God attributes this to Moab having never been chastened: "Moab has been at ease from his youth and has settled on his lees."
I feel like we could plug in so many nations or individual names to take Moab's place in this verse, and it would still be just as applicable. I came to realize a few years ago that I had been too comfortable, and that was why God was allowing me to have so many challenges. Comfort is the enemy of holiness. When we are too comfortable for too long it causes us to "settle on our lees." We become complacent, then proud; we think we are entitled to live as we do, and we can easily turn away from God, or just consider Him an accoutrement to our comfort.
Moab is going to be greatly chastened, as described in this chapter of Jeremiah, but in the very last verse, God promises He "will restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days." (Jeremiah 48:47). All chastisements are meant to lead us to this hope, the reason God allows us to suffer them here is because He does not want us to suffer eternally. His chastisements are always gifts, meant to awaken us from the super of our comfort, which often leads us to sin, and bring us to the place where we are in right relationship with Him, and where He will restore our fortunes.
