Sirach 45:1. "From his descendants the Lord brought forth a man of mercy, who found favor in the sight of all flesh and was beloved by God and man, Moses whose memory is blessed." Sirach, of course, did not know of Jesus, but his words seem to be describing Him, just as they are Moses.

Everything in the Old Testament points to the New Testament. Even as very real history is playing out in the Old Testament, the hints and prophecies in that history are awakening our hearts and minds to what is to come. Sometimes these hints are like bread crumbs, leading us mysteriously and gently to the truth, making us feel so special and set apart for having found and followed them. Other times they are like blazing neon signs with giant arrows pointing our way to the truth, making us realize that God is trying to get everyone's attention. Moses was a neon sign pointing to Jesus, to our promised exodus from this fallen world where we are slaves to sin, and to our ultimate future Promised Land.

Moses was incredible, and had an incredible relationship with God. No one but he could have done what he did when he did it. No one else could have worked so closely with God to lead the Jews out of slavery and  to the Promised Land. His story is unrepeatable, his memory is indeed blessed. Yet Moses was also, and maybe even more importantly, a "type" for Jesus Christ, pointing the way to what is to come. What Moses did for the Jews in time and geographic space, Jesus did for all of humanity, in all of Creation, for all of time. Moses accomplished great things and also pointed the way to even greater things to come. Jesus is the fulfillment of what Moses and his story point to. Moses gets us ready, Jesus is what we were getting ready for.

The "all flesh" with whom Moses finds favor are the Jews, the Chosen People, (certainly the Egyptians did not look on him with favor!). The "all flesh" with whom Jesus will find favor is, in fact, all of humanity, past, present, and future. Once we reach that point of Jesus finding favor in the sight of all flesh, His promise and covenant will be complete. "[A]t the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:10-11)
