1 Samuel 21:15 "Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?"

The speaker here is the king of Gath and the "madman" is King David, who is fleeing Saul, but is worried that the king of Gath will also view him as a threat, so he feigns madness.

You can tell things are really not going well when you have to feign madness to survive! David is in a bad spot: Saul wants to kill him, so he has to flee Israel, but he is the rightful, beloved, powerful King of Israel, so he can also be seen as a threat no matter where he seeks refuge. David wasn't planning on pretending to be mad, but when he got to Gath, he heard what the king's servants said of him, and realized that was his best course of action. (1 Samuel 21:11-12)

Situations like the one David finds himself in occur when things are in a state of flux, as they are now. When times are changing quickly, order breaks down and the righteous find themselves unsure of where to turn or how to act. When we find ourselves in these situations, as we did a few years ago during COVID, and still, to some extent, continue to today, we can be sure that something bigger is afoot; that God is doing something in our lives or in the world. He has a plan, and things will work out, but these times can be very difficult and we can feel very unsteady.

In tumultuous times, we often have to think on our feet, and we may sometimes seem mad to the rest of the world. That's okay. Getting through the times of change with our principles, and maybe even our lives, intact is what matters.
