Jeremiah 51:24. "I will requite Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea before your very eyes for all the evil that they have done in Zion, says the Lord."
It is so easy to read the Bible (or even look at our own lives) and cast ourselves as the "good guys". When we read things like this - that Babylon will be requited for the evil she has done in Zion - we think "Yeah, God, go get Babylon! They are super bad!" It's much more difficult, and against our nature, to wonder if perhaps we are in need of being requited for the evil we have done. But it is really an important question to ask ourselves. Just as we should try to see ourselves in both sons in the parable of the prodigal son, we should try to see ourselves, individually and as a nation, in both the good guys and the bad guys of the Bible. No person or nation is perfect, we have all done evil to someone else or to God, and we should all reflect on what that evil is, and repent before we are requited.
I love my country and want to preserve it, but I have written before about how I think we might be Babylon right now. We are engaged in tremendous evil. I think we should all reflect on how we may have contributed to our nation getting to this point, even if it is in as small a way as casting a vote. That reflection has to come before repentance, and I am hoping repentance comes soon, so we can avoid being requited before the eyes of the world.
