Jeremiah 9:4-6. God is lamenting how bad his people have become. He warns them to beware of every neighbor and not to trust any brother "for every brother is a supplanter and every neighbor goes about as a slanderer." Everyone deceives his neighbor, no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to speak lies, they commit iniquity and are too weary to repent. They just keep heaping oppression upon oppression and deceit upon deceit.
The line that strikes me in this is that the people have become "too weary to repent." They're not rubbing their hands together, cackling in their evil ways, no, they have just let themselves go much too far. They have taught themselves to lie and to oppress. They don't think anything of it - it's just the way life is, it's just the way people are. Thus, they heap oppression upon oppression, deceit upon deceit, and, if they ever stop to think that something is wrong and should change, it is just too overwhelming to try to think about fixing it - no one person can undo it, so they keep going, too weary to repent.
This happens to people sometimes, and we are there again. But I sense people beginning to arouse themselves. Perhaps we will all overcome the weariness and begin to repent, as some are beginning to do. Let's hope!
